CHAPTER 6

AUGUSTUS

“So, here we are…” Joe said with his charming, crooked smile that made my heart skip. “All alone on a romantic carriage ride.”

“Thank you for stating the obvious.”

The carriage was open-air but had strands of lights all around it, turning it into a glowing ornament and shielding us from view. The edges of the carriage blocked the wind, thawing me some. I still sat rigid as an ice statue though, afraid if I gave my body an inch to relax it would find its way into Joe’s lap.

Joe cleared his throat and shifted, and for the first time, I realized he was uncomfortable too. “I was just trying to break the tension. I know you’re not interested in me.”

He glanced away, eyes fixed on the glimmering lights along Main Street storefronts, but he didn’t look as if he were enjoying the view.

“Shut up.”

He turned toward me, eyes wide. “I’m trying to say I respect your wishes. I’m not going to do something idiotic like beg you to reconsider, or kiss me, or—”

“Shut up,” I growled again.

“Auggie, please…”

That nickname in his soft, pleading voice broke the last thread of my resistance.

I launched myself at him, our mouths crashing together painfully. He grunted, an edge of pain to his tone, as he caught me and pulled me closer. I readjusted, and my awkward landing shifted to heart-racing bliss. His mouth was deliciously warm in the winter air. His body was so much larger beneath mine, but Joe wasn’t hard. Nothing about him was that. He was so, so soft. His mouth, his body, his soul. He felt soft and safe.

“Aug,” he gasped when we separated. “What…”

“You’re just so kind and respectful,” I said, my tone aggrieved. “It makes you impossible to resist.”

His lips quirked into a little smile. “Impossible, huh?”

“Yes!”

He full-out grinned now. “Well, I guess you can’t be held accountable for your actions then. Not even you can overcome the impossible.”

I huffed. “It seems you’re right.” I hesitated. “But what about Clark?”

“What about him?”

“You came here tonight with him. He’s my friend…”

Joe shook his head, one corner of his mouth curled with amusement. “We weren’t on a date. Clark and I have only ever been friends. Is that why you kept scowling at him?”

“Shut up.”

He chuckled. “Is that code for ‘kiss me again’?”

“Maybe.”

He slid one big hand up my back and around to cup my jaw. “You can stop fighting, Auggie. You’re safe with me.”

This man always knew the right thing to say. With a sigh, I gave in. As our lips met, it felt inevitable that I always would.

I was still concerned about what it might mean for the workplace. But if we could get through the past two weeks of sexual tension and awkward avoidance without undue drama, maybe we could navigate a work relationship. I knew Clark was right. Joe didn’t have any power over me. He couldn’t wreak havoc on my career. Darren was right too. Carr Care & Repair was never meant to be my forever job—only a soft place to land.
